How to Make Uploads From Camera Create New Folder by Date

Possible for new folders created every day?

1

Pitiful to ask such a basic question.  But just in case I've missed information technology, is it possible for the R to create new folders every 24-hour interval and place the images in them?  Or is there whatsoever workaround I am non enlightened of?  I'thousand on Mac OS btw, in case that helps.  Right now, the best I can do is sort past date when in the main binder but seeing tens/hundreds/thousand images and manually having to detect where days starting time and cease paradigm by image is a bit irritating for my detail workflow.

It's not the biggest deal but it would exist much more than convenient in my workflow if the pictures were already in folders past date.  I believe my M5 and some other cameras are able to do this.  Non seeing it in the settings which doesn't make me hopeful just perhaps someone else prefers the aforementioned and has figured something out.  TIA!

Hi Everest-01,

Whilst you could manually create a new folder using the R for each day, I don't recall you can configure the camera to do this automatically (I stand to be corrected).  This is a scrap of a hurting, but 'do-able'. You can also manually create folders on the SD card using a computer - every bit explained in the manual p.366 - though this is equally painful. (I besides fright these methods risk developing a severe headache arising from duplicitous file numbers).

If you're using MacOS, you can see the 'Date Created' in Finder by right clicking on the bar higher up the file names (where there are already things like 'Proper noun', 'Size' and 'Kind) and pick 'Appointment Created' from the list. A new cavalcade volition be created showing this data. You lot tin and then 'Sort By' the 'Date Created' by clicking the arrow on the correct side of the column header, making information technology easy to select the files from a sure twenty-four hours (selection the first, concord [Shift], pick the last). If you so right click over the selected files, you'll get an option to make a 'New Binder with Selection'. This will place your selected files from that date into a new folder.

In suggesting this workaround, I'g assuming you lot don't utilize Lightroom (or similar software).

Not sure where this takes you, just there y'all go...

I apply DPP to download pictures to my calculator. It will create a new folder for every twenty-four hours needed and place the pictures accordingly. You can even define the date format.

I unremarkably rename the folders to add together a clarification of what I photographed, just I go on the date first in the name cord to have a cronological list of shoots.

I have non even so seen the big reward in Lightroom and IMO, Adobe's model is a rip-off unless yous edit professionally. I do nearly of my PP in DPP, if pixel-level editing is required, I use a previous version of PS Elements.

Howdy Klaus dk,

For my function, I understand what you lot're saying about Adobe but - unfortunately/ fortunately - when I purchased my R it (kind-of) forced me to upgrade from my perpetual licence LR version 6.14. (Some nice tool developments and the subscription isn't a problem for me).

The big reward to me is, quite simply, speed. I am used to LR. I tried DPP and, whilst it is undoubtedly a superb package, I really floundered with it. I've just returned from a tour with nineteen,800+ raw images to sort/ weed, catalogue and procedure (about all of these were taken with Sony cameras). This task would not be practical for me to attempt with DPP.

LR is likewise very powerful when it comes to cataloguing and managing my image collections.

Although appointment information is already in the meta-data for the file itself and exif information of the prototype, the freeware App 'Transnomino' for MacOS allows batch file renaming with 'date created' (equally well as other data) and this may too be worth consideration by the OP.

(Delight note, DPP is well worth consideration by the OP though and I have absolutely no issue with your postal service - I was only explaining my own situation by manner of this response).

Each to their own...

Have you tried using EOS Utility to copy from your R to your Mac? There is an option for it to copy to your Mac while creating a sub-binder for each shooting day.

Like others accept already stated the R does not make folders by itself but LR volition make dated folders for every twenty-four hour period when y'all import.

Re: Possible for new folders created every day?

Thank you for all the suggestions and your thoughts!

I actually like the suggestions of that Mac shortcut to creating a folder from selected items, and equally like the pick of EOS Utility transferring into folders.  Very handy!

I am a Lightroom user simply my current coincidental workflow does not utilize a mass import into my catalog from the SD card.  I but do not terminate up needing to manage nor edit the majority of what I'one thousand shooting for fun / personal stuff.  Only a certain percentage make my "archive and backup to external drive merely in case" cut and even less make my "manage and edit on LR" cut.  My old catalogs were style besides congested and for not much benefit when I was doing this.  And so I spent way too much time cleaning up the catalog anyhow, whenever I finally get the fourth dimension to practice that.  On the rare occasions where I'm shooting a disquisitional projection with a huge amount of pictures that need editing, managing, and archiving, that is where I go straight into LR and use its organizing tools.  Hoping these opportunities increase in frequency.  Until then, its some transmission piece of work to salve drive infinite and clutter.

Having to insert EOS Utility into my workflow seems a fleck inconvenient for at present.  That creating new folder shortcut seems like that will salve me the nearly time.

For reference and possibly critique, here is my current workflow, in case there are ideas on how to improve it:  (Please note once more that my priority is to save drive space, needlessly bloating my catalog, and forestall spending time subsequently cleaning it up)

  1. Transfer select RAW images that warrant archiving from SD carte du jour to external hard drive into folders named by date taken
  2. Import select images that will be edited only into LR catalog
  3. Edit imported images on LR Classic or CC on iPad
  4. Consign edits to JPEG back to external drive or iCloud bulldoze
  5. Periodically fill-in external drive to another external drive
  6. Reformat SD card
  7. Take more pictures and repeat

I think its worth asking though:  IS it a concern to have a itemize with tons of irrelevant, possibly never touched images in it?  Or is a simpler workflow worth skipping the preemptive cleanup?  Things that crossed my listen were preview cosmos times upon import, size of previews stored, library module and other full general slowness, etc.

Re: Possible for new folders created every day?

Hi Everest_01,

The first thing I would say is that there is no 'right way' or 'wrong manner' - everyone volition have 'their way'. All the same, I have certainly benefitted from looking at what others do and blood-red picking the bits that work for me.

My workflow is -

1. When on tour I redundancy all images to a portable Hd (on return this is stored off-site).

2. On return I transfer all images from the SD cards into LR.

3. This import is on a uncomplicated 'SD card by SD menu' ground, each going into divide folder.

iv. I shop all used SD cards in the safe until the post processing/ concluding back-ups are washed.

v. I then create a master binder and subject area based folders/ sub-folders in LR with images placed into the relevant folder.

6. Images are compared/ reviewed in LR, rejected shots are flagged for deletion (press [X], or [U] to un-flag).

seven. Rejected images are deleted ([Photo]/ [Delete Rejected Photos] and cull selection to 'Delete from Disk'). (Think to Empty the Trash).

8. Images are candy as required (including keywords/ colours), after concluding review not-keepers are deleted (as to a higher place).

9. Export whatsoever files, as required, for social media, prints, iMovie shows etc…

ten. Retain all keeper raw files in LR. Delete any exported files which are no longer needed.

11. Back-up optimised catalogue/ retained raw images (locally and for off-site storage).

12. Format SD cards/ portable Hard disk drive.

Basically, one time in LR the possibilities for searching/ managing/ arranging images are (virtually) endless. My suggestion would be for you to consider using LR as the means to review and go along, or 'cutting', your image files - it is extremely practiced at this particular task.

LR is besides very skilful at creating folders and moving files between them. I of the benefits of using LR to manage your paradigm files (rather than via Finder) is that LR will e'er know where the files are. (As well consider 'smart folders' which automatically get together any images matching set criteria, eastward.g. files with the keywords 'Phil', or 'Karen', from a range of dates).

e.g. Creating a new Folder containing a filtered set of Images based on date taken...

Yous can limit the size of previews created during Import [File Treatment]-[Build Previews], or set LR to discard them after a set number of days [Lightroom Classic]-[Catalogue Settings]-[File Handling], or later clean-up manually [Library]-[Previews]-[Discard **]. You should periodically optimise your catalogue [File]-[Optimise Catalogue]. (And back information technology upwards! - But also consider deleting, or archiving off, the older/ redundant catalogue back-ups. I also proceed a re-create of the latest catalogue back-upward on Dropbox).

Only you tin decide which images yous'd like to go along, but I feel your pain.

My overall advice is to take your time over adopting any changes to your current workflow and do what yous find works best for you. Good luck...

Re: Possible for new folders created every day?

Does "R" include "R5"?

I am trying to go my new R5 to create directors for each twenty-four hour period simply like the SX60HS does.

Thank you once more, Glenn Wilson

Re: Possible for new folders created every mean solar day?

I accept used a Catechism SX60HS for the last 4 or 5 years.

It makes a new directory EVERY DAY.

The directories are labled with the date.

All new pictures are put in the latest directory.

It is Nifty.

I bought the R5 and 100-500 lens and am having a heck of a fourth dimension making the R5 do what the SX60HS does. Spent $7,500 on i.

Canon - Please HELP!

Thank you, Glenn
